Donate your car by Dec 31 for 2024 Texas tax savings

In Texas, your car donation counts on the day it’s picked up. Start our 2‑minute form now, lock in a free tow by December 31, and secure your 2024 IRS tax deduction with Rev Up Giving.

If your car is picked up on or before December 31 in Texas, that’s your donation date for this tax year. With Rev Up Giving, powered by Heritage for the Blind, it takes about two minutes to start: complete the quick online form or call, get a call back within 1–2 business hours on weekdays, and schedule your free tow as early as the same day in many Texas metro areas. Once your pickup is on the calendar for December 31 or earlier, you’re on track for a 2024 deduction as long as the tow is completed as scheduled.

We know Texans are busy, especially around year-end. Whether you’re in Dallas–Fort Worth (Plano, Arlington, Frisco), Houston (Katy, Sugar Land, The Woodlands), Austin (Round Rock, Cedar Park), San Antonio (Alamo Heights, New Braunfels), El Paso, or the Rio Grande Valley, we make donating your car fast and local. Your vehicle doesn’t have to run, pass inspection, or have current registration. A licensed Texas tow partner meets you at your home, office, or ranch, handles the heavy lifting, and you sign the title at pickup. Heritage for the Blind, a real 501(c)(3), uses the proceeds to support people who are blind or visually impaired, and you receive the IRS-compliant paperwork for your taxes.

Your year-end donation timeline

1

Start the 2-minute Texas donation form or call

2 minutes

Enter your contact info, vehicle details, and preferred pickup time, or call to give the same information by phone. Tell us you need pickup by December 31 so we prioritize a year-end slot in your Texas area.

2

Get a coordinator call-back and lock your pickup date

Within 1–2 business hours on weekdays

A friendly Heritage for the Blind coordinator calls you back to confirm your details and schedule your free tow. This is where you choose a pickup day and time on or before December 31, subject to availability in your Texas city.

3

Free licensed Texas tow truck arrives

Same day or next business day in most metros

In major Texas metros, we can often send a licensed tow truck the same day or next business day, Monday–Saturday. They come to your chosen address—home, work, storage lot—and handle the vehicle, even if it doesn’t run.

4

Sign your Texas title at pickup

5–10 minutes at the truck

You hand over the keys (if available) and sign the Texas title as directed. The tow operator will note the exact pickup date—that date is what the IRS treats as your donation date, as long as the transfer is completed.

5

Vehicle sold and tax paperwork mailed

Receipt mailed within 30 days of sale

Your car is transported, processed, and sold. Heritage for the Blind mails you IRS Form 1098‑C or a written acknowledgment within 30 days of the sale so you have documentation for your Schedule A if you itemize deductions.

Year-end tax deduction facts

Your donation date is the pickup date

For IRS purposes, the date your vehicle is actually picked up and transferred—often reflected on the tow and title paperwork—is the donation date. A completed pickup on or before December 31 applies to that tax year.

Form 1098‑C documents larger deductions

If your vehicle sells for more than the IRS reporting threshold, Heritage for the Blind issues Form 1098‑C. This form shows the gross sale price, which is generally the amount you may claim as a charitable deduction.

Deduction usually equals the sale price

In most cases, the IRS limits your car donation deduction to the actual sale price received by the charity, not a price guide estimate. That sale amount appears on your 1098‑C or written acknowledgment.

You must itemize on Schedule A

To use a car donation as a tax deduction, you need to itemize your deductions using Schedule A instead of taking the standard deduction. Consult your tax advisor to see which approach is better for your situation.

30-day window for your receipt

After Heritage for the Blind sells your vehicle, they send your 1098‑C or written acknowledgment within 30 days of the sale. Keep this with your tax records as proof of your qualified charitable contribution.

FAQ

If my car is picked up on December 31 in Texas, is it definitely a 2024 deduction?
Yes. The IRS looks at the date the vehicle is actually transferred to the charity’s control. When your car is picked up and you sign over the title on or before December 31, your donation is treated as made in that tax year, assuming the transfer is properly completed.
How late in December can I start and still get a Dec 31 pickup?
It depends on tow-truck availability in your Texas area. In places like Houston, Dallas, Austin, and San Antonio we often can schedule same-day or next-business-day pickups, but year-end slots fill quickly. The sooner you submit the 2‑minute form or call, the better your chances to secure a December 31 pickup.
Does my car have to run or pass Texas inspection to donate?
No. We accept most vehicles whether or not they run. Your car does not need to pass Texas inspection, and you don’t need current registration for us to tow it. Just be honest about the condition so we send the right equipment to safely pick it up.
What paperwork do I need at pickup in Texas?
You’ll typically need your Texas title and a valid ID. At pickup, you sign the title as directed to transfer ownership to Heritage for the Blind. If you have the keys and any relevant documents (lien release, if applicable), have them ready to keep the visit under 10 minutes.
When will I know how much I can deduct for my car?
After your vehicle is sold, Heritage for the Blind sends you IRS Form 1098‑C or a written acknowledgment within 30 days of the sale. That document states the gross sale price, which is usually the maximum amount you may claim as a charitable deduction if you itemize.
Can I still donate if I’ve misplaced my registration or plates?
In many Texas situations, yes. Registration and plates are often not required for us to tow and process your donation. The title is the key document. If you’re missing paperwork, tell the coordinator during the call so they can explain what’s possible in your specific case.
How much does towing cost and who is the charity?
Towing is completely free to you anywhere in Texas. Rev Up Giving coordinates your donation to benefit Heritage for the Blind, a real 501(c)(3) charity. The proceeds from your vehicle help fund programs for people who are blind or visually impaired, and you receive the appropriate tax acknowledgment.
